students with science experiment

In honor of the 5th grade Science STAAR test, Anson Elementary did a campus-wide science experiment on Monday, May 1st. Some classes chose to do mixtures and solutions. Others chose stations with multiple pieces of science covered. Most importantly, ALL classes chose to have fun!

Kindergarten students investigated which items would sink or float in water. They were given a table to not only record their data, but they even had the opportunity to make predictions on each of their trials! After making their predictions, the investigators then tested their hypotheses, and there was most definitely an array of "Oooos," "Aaaaahhs," and giggles in the classrooms. Needless to say, our kindergarten teachers are doing a fantastic job of preparing smart cookies for the world!!

First grade students investigated capillary action. They created 5 different-colored solutions in plastic cups. Then they draped a long "capillary" through all five solutions, and students watched as the capillary filled with solution and created a fun rainbow! Their science experiment even included some cross-curricular action as the students witnessed first-hand colors mixing to form secondary colors!

Fourth grade students started their investigation in the classroom by watching a video on how to build a balloon powered car. They then were given the materials and had to build the car without any instructions. They were also only given 15 minutes to build their car, and they all got it done in time! At 2:00, they made their way to the cafeteria to make final modifications, and then it was time for the tournament! They raced for both speed and length in separate brackets, and they sure had fun competing!

From density to capillaries and beyond balloon-powered cars, AES sure had a fun day gearing up for the 5th grade Science STAAR test. Mrs. Stewart has prepared them well, and we are excited to see their success!
